Just caught the tail end of a World Cup Ski race from Bromont yesterday, where Johnny Davidson, Robbie's younger brother, won the slalom event. Rad. Them boys can really move.
chreods—areas in a natural process that are structurally stable—“islets of determinism separated by zones where the process is indeterminate or structurally unstable” (Thom 1983: 16). The chreod can be broken down into “elementary catastrophes” through the introduction of dynamic models. The most stable chreods are those “most charged with ‘meaning’” (Thom 1983: 17).
“Thom was motivated in his own research by the work of biologist C.H. Waddington, who developed the notion of chreods (“necessary developmental pathways”). And Rosenboom has suggested that the term is useful for designating the manner in which humans (including composers) may act in ordering the forces that they encounter (14). Rosenboom defines a ‘zone of influence’ as ‘the region of space-time surrounding a chreod, inside which energy and information processes that are channeled through the chreod can affect events’ (15).
